Arabic and Western Music

The traditional ude

The Band of the Royal Air Force of Oman (RAFO) is already featured on this website and the RAFO Arabic Music Group is also linked, having travelled to England and performed a lunchtime concert in the RAF’s official church, St Clement Danes in London’s Strand. During the same week, they performed two concerts at the British Museum where they also gave live musical examples during a lecture on the traditional music of Oman.

The Development of Arabic and Western Music is a text-book written for students in the RAFO School of Music. It details the history of the two cultures, compares them, and explains why each can sound strange, even out of tune, to the other.

....The Band of the Royal Air Force of Oman. The RAFO Band has very close links with the RAF Music Services as it has been trained mainly by serving and ex-RAF musicians. Ian Kendrick was Director of Music for twenty years, firstly on loan service and then as a contract member of RAFO. He arrived when the Band comprised fifty young Arabs at a very early stage in their development. When he left, the band numbered 165 including a concert/parade band, a Corps of Drums, two Pipe bands, a Fanfare Party, an Arabic (traditional) Music Group, an Arabic Pop Group, and an Arabic (traditional) Dance Team.
